Answers to Common Questions

What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent makeup, also known as micropigmentation, is a cosmetic or medical procedure that involves carefully applying specialized pigments under the epidermis layer — approximately 0.02 mm beneath the skin’s surface.

This technique enhances or restores natural features such as eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips, and can also be used for medical purposes like scar camouflage, 3D areola restoration, or scalp micropigmentation. The result is a long-lasting, natural enhancement that reduces the need for daily makeup application while maintaining a soft, realistic appearance.

Is There Pain During the Procedure?

Most clients experience minimal to no pain during the permanent makeup procedure. To ensure your comfort, a topical anesthetic cream is applied before the treatment to numb the area.

Additionally, a secondary anesthetic is used during the procedure to maintain comfort throughout the entire process. Every client’s sensitivity level is different, but the combination of high-quality numbing products and professional technique helps make the experience very tolerable and comfortable.

How Long Does the Initial Appointment Take?

The initial permanent makeup appointment typically takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on the area being treated and the technique used.

This time includes:

  • A consultation to discuss your desired shape, color, and style

  • Mapping and design to create the perfect outline for your facial features

  • The application of topical anesthetic for your comfort

  • The micropigmentation procedure itself

  • A review of aftercare instructions and scheduling your touch-up session (usually 4–6 weeks later)

This detailed process ensures that your results are precisely shaped, symmetrical, and beautifully healed.

What Is a “Touch-Up” Appointment?

A Touch-Up appointment is a follow-up session that takes place 4–6 weeks after your initial procedure. During this visit, we perfect and reinforce the pigment that was implanted in the skin during your first session.

Because the skin heals differently for everyone, some areas may fade or heal lighter than others. The touch-up allows us to:

  • Adjust color intensity or tone if needed

  • Refine the shape or symmetry

  • Ensure your final results are even, natural, and long-lasting

This step is an essential part of the permanent makeup process and helps you achieve the most beautiful and lasting outcome.

What Pigments Are Used?

At Microblading by Joanna, we use only high-quality pigments that are both EU-certified and FDA-approved for cosmetic use. These pigments meet the strictest international safety and health standards to ensure the best results and maximum client safety.

Our pigments are:

  • EU-certified and FDA-approved for cosmetic tattooing

  • Hypoallergenic, cruelty-free, and vegan-friendly

  • Free from heavy metals, parabens, and harsh chemicals

  • Formulated for long-lasting color stability and smooth healing

Each pigment is carefully selected to achieve natural-looking results while maintaining the highest level of safety and quality assurance.

How Long Does Permanent Makeup Last?

Permanent makeup typically lasts between 1 to 3 years, depending on several factors such as skin type, pigment color, lifestyle, and aftercare.

Over time, the pigment gradually fades, allowing for adjustments or color refreshes through maintenance touch-ups. Clients with oily skin, active lifestyles, or frequent sun exposure may notice their results fading faster.

To keep your permanent makeup looking fresh and defined, a yearly color boost is recommended. With proper care, your results will remain soft, natural, and beautifully maintained for years.

What Is the Difference Between Micropigmentation and Tattooing?

Micropigmentation is a gentler and more skin-friendly procedure compared to traditional tattooing. During micropigmentation, specialized cosmetic pigments are implanted into the epidermal layer of the skin, approximately 0.02 mm beneath the surface. Because the pigment is placed in this shallow layer, the color gradually fades over time, allowing for adjustments or touch-ups to maintain a natural look as your skin changes.

In contrast, traditional tattooing deposits ink deeper into the dermis layer of the skin. This makes tattoos permanent and more difficult to modify, and over time, the pigment can change color, often taking on a bluish-green tone as it ages.

Micropigmentation is specifically designed for delicate facial areas such as eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips, providing soft, natural, and refined results—unlike the bold, long-term effect of traditional body tattoos.
